Walking the Tracks Near My Home

Again with the words, I took this walk the day after I almost ran out of gas, taking solace in the fact that I had a camera and two feet. I was edging on depression and feeling sorry for myself. As I walked down the street I began to change my thoughts immediately, the fragrance that hit my nose was that of fresh cut wood. Sawmill cut wood, I love this smell, being from a small town of mills and logging, it sends me off on a trip. I think of my father who smelled like wood from my earliest memory. He worked at the plywood mill and brought it home on his clothes and his body. These are memories from when I was young and still felt safe and secure in his arms. I was observing the mill yards, thinking of home, watching the men driving forklifts and remembering what it was like to be a little girl around all the dangerous machinery, how I loved every minute of it. Also the photos of the log trucks are a nostalgic stop for me. Good and bad memories of the youth of myself and the youth of a community now gone, grown into the future with steadfastness and hope.

You will not see the same kind of beauty as you normally do with my photo posts,  I hope you see what I did in these.

I captured a lot of sky in these, because I love how it  frames the world.

  1. Your childhood memories echo mine in many ways. My GrandDaddy was a farmer, tobacco and cotton, mostly, but he farmed whatever would bring money in. He also knew how to operate just about any type of machinery that existed for farm work, and he worked with wood often. The smell of freshly cut wood, sawdust and the linseed oil used on machinery - oh my, the memories that evokes!

I enjoyed walking with you on your photographic journey and saw much beauty in these photos. Lovely work, Jan! I will be back to treat myself in the future.

  2. Thank you Dawn for visiting. The smell of the mills can almost make me swoon. Sounds a little silly but it was such a happy time in my life and I had so few from that time period. mills and pipe tobacco. I am glad to you enjoyed my little journey and you are more than welcome anytime.

  3. I am loving taking these walks with you! There's something about graffiti near the train tracks that makes it extra cool looking. :-)

  5. I wonder what it is about railroad tracks that make them so compelling to photograph. I find myself drawn to them also. Maybe the vagabond in all of us!!

  6. I don't know, I think about all the places the tracks lead and the people who have passed by the spot I am on. The life around the tracks is also very interesting to me.
